Did you know there are 617 seeds in a Pomegranate?

There is evidence that the pomegranate is one of the first fruits to have been cultivated by man dating between 4000 B.C. to 3000 B.C. for the first time in Persia. It gradually moved towards China in 100 B.C. then finding its way to India, North Africa and Europe. Ancient Romans tanned pomegranate skins and used them as leather and when the Pomegranate reached Egypt it was respected and called the "Eternal Fruit". Dried fruit has been found in "Bronze Age" tombs.

The pomegranate reached American shores by way of the Spanish conquistadors and missionaries in 1521 and to the USA in 1792.

Pomegranate is an astringent, sweet sour, cooling fruit that is known to increase blood hemoglobin. Since ancient times, the pomegranate fruit has been revered for its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. The juice of this precious fruit has long used as a defense against harmful internal parasites (such as those that cause diarrhea), as well as for its abundant nutritional value. Long used in folk medicine to treat inflammation, sore throat, and rheumatism in the Middle East and in India, the delicious sweet-tang of Pomegranate juice provides a substantial amount of potassium, vitmain C and niacin (a B Vitamin).

Pomegranate has a slightly sweet, yet tangy flavor and is a natural flavor choice for candy making.
