Pure Fun™ licorice cotton candy will have you licking your fingers!

Licorice comes from a plant called the Glycyrrhiza, meaning ‘sweet root’ in Greek and has a long and honorable history. Generous supplies were discovered in King Tut's tomb, while Egyptian hieroglyphics record the use of Licorice in a popular beverage by men in the days when the Bible was still being written.

Alexander the Great, the Scything armies, Roman Emperor Caesar, and even India's great prophet, Brahma, are on record endorsing the beneficial properties contained in Licorice. Warriors used it for its ability to quench thirst while on the march, while others (including Brahma and venerable Chinese Buddhist sages), recognized Licorice's valuable healing properties.. During the Middle Ages, crusaders brought licorice to England.

For over 3,000 years, licorice root has been used as a remedy for peptic ulcers, sore throats and coughs in eastern and western medicine. Licorice root has been used since the third century BC to help dissipate coughs.

The licorice flavor found in candy usually comes from the Anise plant.

Anise is one of the oldest known spice plants used both for culinary and medicinal purposes since ancient times. There is evidence that anise was used in Egypt as early as 1500 B.C. To aid digestion the Romans enjoyed anise-spiced cakes after heavy meals and it was spread throughout Europe by Roman legions. In the Bible there is mention of paying tithe with anise in the book of Matthew. In 1305, anise was listed by King Edward I as a taxable drug and merchants bringing it into London paid a toll to help raise money to maintain and repair London Bridge.

Anise or aniseed is a vegetable as well as an herb, and comes from the same family as fennel. It has been used throughout history for medicinal purposes and for its fragrance.

It is anise that is traditionally used to flavor enhance the flavor of licorice candy.
